Eltenios

Eltenios is a male Growlithe specimen, later Arcanine. A roaming wild Pokémon serving the guardians of the Cadrícean Sovereignty, he roams the region of Suocé running errands for the Sovereignty's rulers. As an envoy of the Sovereigns of Cadrícea he enjoys some particular protections and is tasked with missions the Sovereign consider critical for the short-term stability of the realm. He is one of the main characters of Playfield .

The base character (see Character Concept) is also the Fledglingsverse.

Cadrícean Sovereignty, Terrakion

While serving known Sovereign, Eltenios is not EX Branded and thus has none of the protections the Branding imbues on the marked Pokémon; still, Eltenios can make up for the difference on his own, and he boasts of not having ever been tagged by a Pokéball nor by the sensors of the Pokédexes of the trainers he has fought; obviously the first claim is true, though the second is much harder to quantify. On his own, Eltenios has been capable of feats that have earned him the attention, zeal and pride of the wild Pokémon population of Suocé, such as racing the Sun to the dawn of the shortest day of the year (), and at least in eastern Suocé he is considered by wild Pokémon a sort of folk hero.

Eltenios has one known acquaintance in the world of trained Pokémon, a racing Rapidash from Émpovi named Berecien. While he used to be part of a pack, he no longer retains stable contact with them because of his job. Due to his age, it is likely his parents have already passed away.

Life

Spoilers!
This section deals with events not yet published in Suocéverse canon (as of the last update of this article).

Eltenios was in his child years part of a wild pack living east of Javise and his life was for the most part unremarkable. The pack was one among the various groups of wild Pokémon taking advantage of the growth spurt of the Javise / Ísparus road chain to look for stability and food, sometimes even tricking human travellers or stealing food from them; Eltenios' pack would often cross paths with the Houndour packs roaming from the western side of the country.

Among the few adventures that Eltenios' pack would see over the years, their exploration of the mountainous terrain to the northeast would have them attempt to trail a rumoured “Emperor of Fire” , a mythical figure suspected by some to be a Entei living in the cliffs of Northern Suocé.

Eventually the years came and went by, pack members grew older and started going their own ways, and as the pack split Eltenios joined a small pack formed by a few of his buddies. This pack, interested in the potential for running and exploring undisturbed, migrated to the eastern side of the Javise chain and explored the desert and the paths to the north, and often went around Salípolis and its surrounding settlements to reach the rich grounds of the Mezze Estate. It was in their attempts to sneak into the grounds for various activities and escapades there that they would face local opposition, and Eltenios would come to meet Berecien the (back then) Ponyta, and the two would over time become friends.

In some gatherings Eltenios took part in around the Estate and the grounds leading to the cities, he sometimes spoke of seeing the rumoured Emperor of the North around the easternland, but never disclosed anything else about those sightings to no one besides Berecien.

Becoming an Envoy

At some point near 3720 one of the deer regents of the southern Sovereignty, Cobalion, took notice of Eltenios and his abilities to wander around the grounds of both Pokémon and humans. The deer were at the time looking for Pokémon they could recruit to their service, and after Sahlai ran a background check on the canine, Terrakion agreeded that Eltenios would make an excellent addition.

One of the deer went with an envoy and intercepted the pack that Eltenios was a member of, then offered him a permanent job under the rule of the Sovereign. Eltenios' pack, worn out over the years, conceded that this line of work would secure Eltenios for the foreseeable future and they advised him he should go. Eltenios was warned by the deer that his service would be signed in for life, and while initially reluctant Eltenios eventually agreed.

For his induction as an envoy of the Cadrícean Sovereignty, Eltenios was forced to evolve via Fire Stone and put under charge of Terrakion (Serebii Character Interviews). He would be employed as a secure courier for both messages and items of interest that the Sovereign considered of high importance to move around and protect. For his first mission, Eltenios was tasked with the recovery of two suspectedMoltres eggs from the Crossed Winds Temple in Caledoria, mission that was ultimately failed due to external circumstances ( Gelid Remainder (TBA) ). Upon his return Eltenios sought the “Emperor of the North”, and he mentioned the figure gave him an implicit approval of his line of work, but it is not known if Eltenios actually met this entity.

Over the years, Eltenios has carried out several missions for Terrakion and the other Sovereign, his position upgrading to the point he was tasked with moving items the three deer considered of extreme relevance for the stability of the Realm. Still, he refrained from carrying live cargo considering it too “chatty”, until a special request to the Sovereign by an ally entity had him deliver five Pokémon for the first time ( Interim (TBA) ).

About one year after the Hoenn Near-Apocalypse, Eltenios was brought in to council by the Sovereign Trio who tasked him with a long-term mission: he was to leave Suocé for the Orange Islands and join a team effort there to track down and guard a chick named Pleo, believed to be the offspring and to-be-successor of the Forsaker Protector Lugia ( Suocéverse: Legends (TBA) ).

End spoilers.

At an unknown point in between his employment for the Sovereign and the events of Generation 1/3, Eltenios and Berecien raced the Sun in the day of the solstice, then all the way back to the East, the two Pokémon beating it in the shortest night of the year ( Playfield ).

At an also undetermined point in time before Generation 1/3, and while he was resting in the Mezze Estate on the way to deliver a message to the Sovereign from the Pokémon living in the northern side of the continent, Eltenios told some details of his life story to an interviewer who got to the place looking for him (Serebii Character Interviews).

Personality

Eltenios can be described largely as a Pokémon that was born into a world of few basic rules, did not know what to do with his freedom during his early years and had the good fortune of learning his lesson without losing the entirely of it. Growing as a wild Pokémon in an environment of high competition for the basic survival he honed his abilities without realizing until he earned positions and roles that common wild Pokémon usually look at with a larger-than-life perspective.

Even in his adulthood Eltenios retains much of the carefree attitude that he had as a child. He is quick to mock friends, even Berecien (Playfield), is eager to participate in communal activities when given the chance, and does not hold strong attachments to any place or group that prevent him from, more or less in his words, going wherever the wind takes him (Serebii Character Interviews).

One aspect of the character discussed in the meta is that Eltenios' close friendship with Berecien would be one of the few aspects where Eltenios interacts with trained Pokémon regularly, and their friendship would have grown to the point that Eltenios, formerly a child Growlithe part of a gang that had to be frequently run out of the Estate grounds, is now much welcome by his friend who would even invite him to spend some time doing more “human” activities, such as watching movies.

The original Playfield has Eltenios be the one that remarks on the various legends humans have about Pokémon like Arcanine and Rapidash; while for a rewrite knowledge knowledge of the Rapidash myth would sensibly go to Berecien, Eltenios would likely still be the one to point out -and be highly proud of- the fact that the lore humans have about Pokémon of their kind is part of the reason why their species are respected and sought for.

Techniques

Eltenios's ability is :?:undecided(meta/in-universe). The most likely candidate setup is that he and Berecien share the Flash Fire ability.

Other techniques potentially known / currently undecided:

Meta

Due to his exposure, Eltenios is one of two characters together with Inka that could be considered one of the Suocéverse's flagships. He is also the character that has appeared or been hinted to in the most amount of works both in the Suocéverse and out, and he has even more screentime planned for. Moreover, the character concept he builds from has been shared and has seen good mileage under SpitefulMurkrow's adaption of him for the Fledglingsverse.

Concept Evolution

As a character concept, Eltenios first originated as one of the two then-unnamed protagonists in PokéCommunity's SWC 2009 entry, Playfield. The original character concept was later adapted into the Wild Pokémon in the Big City roleplay, where he joined the cast and was first named. Later he was readapted to the WAAPTverse as a guest character, making a short stint as a replacement fighter mon for Gary Oak's team during the 2012 Gold Conference Arc.

Fledglingsverse

A different incarnation of the character concept, still retaining the name “Eltenios”, shows up as one of the members of lead Team Traveller in the Fledglingsverse, a PMD-esque setting with SpitefulMurkrow and Virgil134 as the co-developers. SpitefulMurkrow's Fledglings take on the character draws more closely from the character concept as it would port in Big City and places this core concept in the setting of a huge sea with sparse, struggling islands to develop him.

In the Fledglingsverse, Eltenios is a Growlithe who used to live in a Mystery Dungeon in his childhood, part of an island annexed by one of the two big powers of the setting. During the annexation period he lived with his mother, an Arcanine named Sirmia but got separated from her and had to wander the MD alone for a time, struggling to survive on his own. While Sirmia joined an escape attempt and tried to reach back to the MD, she was not able to make it in time, and left her fellow escapees Pekka and Pyry with a request to find the Growlithe and take him under their wing.

Eltenios loved to run (what Eltenios doesn't) but his escape had him thrown out to the world and he ended up being signed up and confined to the Iron Fleet, a pirate crew led by Captain Hess. For a few years Eltenios would go on pirate adventures that would eventually land him in an assault on Tromba, the island of resident protagonists Nida and Crom of Team Traveller, where he and others of his bunch are captured after the Protector Pleo attempts to defend the settlement.

After the island sees confrontation against other powers coming in to claim Pleo, Eltenios would be forcibly signed up to Team Traveller as part of his “community service”, tasked with helping them get Pleo back. Taking a page from the Pokémon games perhaps, the other two decide to nickname him “Elty” because they don't want to bother with his full name, and the nick has since stuck. Eltenios still seeks to shakes off his “affiliation” to Tromba and return to the Iron Fleet, but over time he slowly (veeeery slooowly) comes to care more about his current teammates he's stuck with.

An element of note is that even in this new setting, Eltenios and Berecien share a number of connections: their families hailing from the same homeland and their current lines of work present potential for having them meet and develop a notorious relationship, what with putting a pirate-turned-reluctant-hero together with a nobleman double-dutying as a soldier for Honor. This and some other factors maintain the nod to their relationship in Playfield .

SpitefulMurkrow has published in the Fledglings thread a special, The Deepest Wounds (1) (2) (3), that covers the origins of Eltenios in the setting and how did he end up joining the Iron Fleet.

Name Origin

Eltenios' name comes from the Esperanto language, an adaption of the conjugated future of the verb elteni, “to endure”; the name is, as stated by Eltenios himself, taken to mean that he will endure and won't ever give up, this most likely referring to his love of racing and roaming the realm of Suocé. The Fledglingsverse version of Eltenios also points out this element a number of times, though most other characters don't care to listen to him about it and just keep naming him “Elty”.

Trivia

  • Eltenios is the first Pokémon characters in the Suocéverse to be officially named (after his 2011 appearance in Big City).
  • In Big City, when threatened by Haunter about his lack of fighting ability, Eltenios responds that moving stuff around, and people to safety, is his strong suit – precisely as he has fooled Haunter's companions into bringing an injured Jet to safe harbour.
    • That said, from an empirical perspective Eltenios' actual strong point seems to be street smarts and mind games in that verse, as he's managed to extract information from all of Scyther, Katan, Aaron and Haunter in different occasions where he was the one captured or otherwise targetted.
  • Eltenios had a short stint as one of Gary Oak's Pokémon in the Gold Conference arc in WAAPT; this was a temporary position his WAAPT incarnation was signed into.
  • Eltenios is the Suocéverse character with the most appearances in non-Suocéverse works, including Big City, WAAPT, Fledglings and Serebii's Character Interviews.
